Z Book Review #5

Jim Carroll - The Basketball Diaries

Finished up this book a few weeks ago, took me a while to get to writing my review. It's the tale of a very young, I mean real young between 12 and 16, and talented basketball player growing up in New York City in the 1960's. He was playing with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on all-star teams. It follows his day to day attempts to score drugs, specifically heroin, as well as the issues of girls, Cold-War scares, and prostitution. It is a coming of age story ten years before people normally have it in their lives, so it gives a unique and haze filled perspective. This is definitely not a book that I would recommend to anybody looking for casual reading, but if you like reading Kerouac stuff, it is similar, yet the sentences are much more structured and easy to follow. Apparently this was turned into a movie starring Leo DiCaprio, I have yet to see it, but it is on my Netflix queue.
